A Frightening Conclusion

I am a teacher and I taught a class last night. It was easy for me as and I was teaching a familiar subject. Still, as I looked at each student's face, I was reminded that as I delivered the subject matter, the potential to influence my students was overwhelming. There's always a need never to forget how important it is to have the right mindset each time I teach a class. There's a quote from Haim Ginott who wrote the book, "Between Parent & Child" on the notice board in front of my desk. Here's what he says:
I've come to a frightening conclusion. I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my personal approach that creates the climate. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, a child humiliated or de-humiliated.

It's my commitment to give of the best to my students each time I teach.

Indeed a lovely lesson for all teachers. Power has to be subtle and should create a feeling of respect, rather than fear.
